Graphic Design 2.1: Professional Practice, Project 2: Tutor Feedback and Reflection
With the Research Task you have selected Patagonia and Apple as your examples. You have made really valid points about these companies/brands.
For Ex1 you have, as usual shown very thorough research. Before you start refining your logo digitally it would be helpful to see other media being used. This would enable you to bring a bit more texture/personality into the design. By doing this there would be a bit more of ‘Leicester’ in the design. Otherwise we could just change it to Loughborough on Stage and it would still look the same. You have started to do this with the colour palette but these still don’t represent the full vibrancy and diversity of the city. Keep pushing this aspect of the design. The lettering LOS could also be tried in other colours rather than black. Black does not need to be the default logo colour. Also, is the O as important as the L and S? If not you can then explore the hierarchy of the LOS to LoS or L.S etc.
Looking back, this design is definitely ‘generic’ and could be used for any area/city. This design definitely needs more ‘Leicester’ in it. I liked the colour palette and should’ve considered the actual logo design in the same way. The visual hierarchy is something I didn’t consider, that is a very interesting area for improvement.
In Ass2 you have shown a general understanding of the confectionary market. Your specific research into Lindt is thorough. Alongside this you have also looked at some more contemporary chocolate packaging and branding. This was a good decision as the dominant brands lack the vitality of these newer brands. You have produced various logo options considering both a more modern approach and a legacy one. This shows an in-depth response to the brief. Your brand guidelines document presents everything clearly and you have produced a convincing visual solution. I guess I would throw into the mix the question – what would a radical makeover of Lindt be?
I enjoyed this task and felt it was an improvement on my previous branding task/assignment 1. A more radical makeover of Lindt could be something completely different or representative of a different area of the confectionary market, for example Haribo is a more ‘fun’ brand. This could be a fun task to revisit.
Critical Review: it’s good to see a range of mind maps leading your research/starting points. You’ve got lots of potential topics.. Which interests you the most? You can save other ideas for subsequent units.
I have later reviewed my ideas in the next critical review task, refining my favourite ideas here.
