R1 It’s good that you also focussed on a couple of ‘smaller’ big brands.

You have shown extensive research and considered cultural respect throughout your idea generation. Your design process has shown a very good range of mixed media testing with visual experimentation evident throughout. This has meant that your final solution has retained some of that textural ‘personality’. The final logo design has impact and works well at scale and at a distance. Perhaps try reversing out the repeat pattern so that it is a red pattern on a pale background (that would be the paper stock). At the moment the red is dominating the design so it ends up looking rather ‘bitty’.

  • I have made that simple improvement which has made so much more of an impact, the red looks way better on the white background. This shows out more. I also adjusted the weights and sizes slightly. The improvements can be found here.

Your more specific title has helped to narrow down your topic ‘How has postmodernism influenced logo design?’ You can now start to structure your essay with headings and subheadings so that you know what the flow of the text will be.

Your research and lists have fed very well into the start of your design process. Your logo redesign work has referenced the intended links to Rauschenberg. At this early design stage you could have taken the opportunity to take even more visual risks with the logo and type. This would give you the opportunity to ‘let your hair down’ a bit more. The design can then be reigned in, if necessary, at this point. You have shown plenty of inventive mixed media play that has really enhanced your design process. The work you have produced definitely has a feel of Rauschenberg’s more ‘subtle’ work and you have explained your decision-making process very well. It works well in context and is suitable for your intended audience. However, due to the ‘playing it a bit safe’ at the start it still looks a bit tame at the other end of the design process. You mention altering the colour scheme to be less muted so that might be a place to start.

  • I did not intent to ‘play it safe’ with the designs, only to reference Rauschenberg’s more muted/quiet works I had researched. The final designs do come off more subtle and safe though and other colours/works could’ve been explored. There are plenty of other more dramatic works/colours I could’ve experimented with referencing/designing.
