Core Concepts- Exercise 7: A visual diary

Exercise 7: A visual diary

Start a scrapbook, sketchbook or use a blog to document the visual world around you. Find examples of visual language that interest you, these could be taken from anywhere (art, film, photography, illustration, design, craft, cinema, hobbies, etc).

I decided to create my visual diary digitally here on my learning log. I will refer back to this page and add new/current images/inspiration. I began by creating some mood boards to display my favourite art/design. I found this method helpful when working through tasks as it allows a lot of varied visuals to be viewed on one page, which you can open and gain different inspiration from each time.

To start with I went through phone screenshots and ‘inspiration’ folders on my laptop and chose some favourites, a lot is art/finished pieces, some is clothing and leaflet/article layouts. I gain a lot of imagery/typography from old/new books and magazines I have began to collect, I collate these (sometimes cut out or not) in a folder with plastic sleeves that I can view the imagery easily through.

I find that everything inspires me in some way, whether its a news article, film, reading or a person stood outside of a shop. Since enjoying art and creating personal work I have looked at things differently, and continue to do so more while working through this course. I will continue to document these findings here.

At the moment due to the Corona Virus and local rules, there are no museums/galleries or events happening, I can’t even go to the cinema (which is the most painful part) but as soon as they are open I will be sure to document more from these places. Before this most recent lockdown I went to a Van Gogh Live event (of which I documented some images of the event in a previous task) which I found interesting. I love Van Gogh but the best part of the event I found was it’s layout and interior design, there were large sunflowers everywhere, leading towards projections of paintings.

Looking through my collection of inspiration I definitely am drawn to the more abstract or collage style of art and design. I enjoy a lot of work from/inspired by the dada movement, pop art and abstract expressionism. Even from more modern art/adverts I like, are more mark making style pieces with a limited colour palette. I like black, white and grey images with small additions of colours/limited colours. I find it very interesting looking back and analysing, asking why this is and I am unsure, all I know is that I am drawn to prefer this style over a more illustrative or digitalised look.
